Office Moves (IT Infrastructure)

At NODE58, we have worked with companies to help them move their offices and all the IT Infrastructure, ensuring an outage-free transition to the new space.   Whether this entails building new Server Rooms with all of the infrastructure necessary (HVAC, Security, Networking, Server Racks, etc) or setting up 400 PC/workstations over a weekend, detailed planning and coordination is required for a successful move with minimum impact to the business.

Teck Resources Ltd., Vancouver (July 2007-Present)

Project Manager (Vancouver Head Office Move) - In this project Rob was responsible for planning an Office Move for Teck Resources, Canada's largest mining company.  Head Office Vancouver (350 staff) moved into the new Bentall 5 building (5 floors) and the logistics of moving the IT Infrastructure and all associated computers, networking gear, phone system, and software was Rob's main responsibility.

Specifically, Rob will plan and coordinate all IT (Technology) related moves :

  • Moving all the servers to a new Calgary Data Centre and building a new Data Centre in Bentall 5 Vancouver.
  • Designing, purchasing, and installing a new VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) Cisco Phone System.
  • Designing, purchasing, and installing a new Security System (Siemens) with multi-chip Access Cards.
  • Evaluating and choosing a new Printer fleet (Canon and HP).
  • Designing, purchasing, and installing a new Enterprise Backup and Recovery System (CommVault and Data Domain).
  • Implementing a Disaster Recovery Plan.
  • Coordinating the move of all Software Applications to the new Data Centre.
  • Designing, purchasing, and installing a new Video Conferencing system (Polycom) in Bentall 5.

Project Manager (Santiago, Toronto, and Beijing Office Moves) - Currently Rob is managing office moves in Santiago, Chile, Toronto, Canada, and Beijing, China.

This entails :

  • Deploying new VOiP phone systems.
  • Designing Server Room and associated infrastructure (HVAC, Security, Networking, Server Racks, etc).
  • Cabling office space with Cat 6 and multiple ports per workstation.
  • Coordinating office furniture and meeting room technology.
  • Deploying new Video Conferencing solutions. (Polycom and Roundtables).
  • Coordinating staff moves over weekends.

Ledcor Industries Ltd., Vancouver (July 2004-Nov 2004)

Project Manager and Logistics Coordinator - In November of 2004, Ledcor moved its Head Office (400 staff) into the Shaw Tower (which they constructed) and Rob was contracted to Project Manage the move from an IT perspective.

This included :

  • Building a new Server Room.
  • Moving the Servers, Networking equipment, and all associated IT Infrastructure.
  • Moving 400+ PC Workstations using a temp crew of 20 for setup and testing (using headset radio for communications).
  • Moving existing PBX phone systems, security systems, paging systems.
  • All handled logistically using MS Project (Gantt chart was over 36 pages) and intense planning delivered a move that was virtually flawless allowing over 250 employees to resume working immediately.  (left work on a Friday, came in on Monday to a new office).
